Customer Rating: Summary: A Feature Rich System at a Value Price Comment: I chose this feature rich machine as offering more than any other when it is on sale. It is primarily for business, which could be done with aplumb with a slightly more dated dual-core CPU upwards of $200 less. But, the sale price made it possible to justify this HP's i3 Intel core for the occassional dabbling in multimedia and DSLR photo editing for the more pleasurable and smooth experience it can offer. It replaces a venerable, but dieing Toshiba A45 Satellite just in time to migrate. Toshiba had good offerings, but none touch this HP's bang for the buck that I could find on the shelf during an urgent need. A Toshiba model was my second pick with fewer features and respectably more money. The hard-core gamers will want an i5 engine with upscale graphics. For business and casual multimedia, there's nothing wrong, here.
It is ported out the yazoo beyond its 4 USB slots and the manual suggests it has a built-in TV tuner that will work with off-the-air signals or satellite/cable services and also includes HDMI compatibility. A remote control is included, but the accessories and cables are not. Since these features are not now in my radar, I would refer you to HP's product site for the accurate details now that you know it's possible.
As a touch-typist, the keyboard is comfortable and responsive. I see touch-pads as necessary evils over a wireless mouse and prefer to turn mine off with the included and readily accessible nearby switch; no software clicking required. I'm using the touch-pad at this writing; it has a right-side scroll bar that wants to work when I don't want it to and not respond when I do, but doubt this is much more than me and the nature of that beast on any model. The upper portion of the keyboard panel includes touch controls for the wireless adapter, volume and speaker mute. The speaker tone is well balanced for their size, notably not overly tinny abd tend to splatter a tad on heavy bass from a good file.
The 15" class screen is just right for these 60-year old eyes that have worn glasses since dirt was made. The white is almost too bright, while black contrast is just very slightly washed out, but not an objection. I note I like it best by keeping a bit back from it and have yet tried to fine tune it to my taste. I don't see it as any kind of issue.
I have played a few of my homebrew HQ .WMV and DVD burned videos along with the store bought variety; it runs through them with ease and they look crisp and clear. Following the initial turn-on setup, I was greatly pleased with the performance of HP's N-draft wireless adapter, which downloaded a 311MB printer driver file much faster than I expected in roughly 10-minutes. Hot dog, Cat5 is now dead in our house with reliable performance at the farthest points indoors. Yippee! Just as nice, Windows 7 actually detected our AT&T U-verse router with ease and established connections with all of our networked devices without one complaint ... what a breath of fresh air compared to my wife's Vista machine, which refused to connect anything under any circumstance no matter what without installing independent network control software.
The initial setup includes an HP routine that makes a one-time set of 3 x 4.7GB DVD factory-state restoration discs ... your data is not restored. I note Windows 7 finally comes with an automated backup system that can schedule a weekly backup of your files, or a full drive backup on demand. Despite this nice feature, HP's bloatware includes a handful of on-line vendors ranting for your backup business immediately followed by Norton ranting at how stupid I am for not having activated its AV suite. Sorry, but the last time I gave Norton access to one of my machines it was like dealing with the IRS; once you buy into the system it is impossible to get out and it won't happen, again.
This box is billed as a 'mainstream' general purpose laptop that can do most tasks pleasingly quick with all the I/O porting most anyone would ever use. That's a good one-sentence summary.
Customer Rating: Summary: HP dv6-2150us Comment: I started to use this laptop only for 2 days and my first impressions are the following,
Pros;
- PRICE only [...] (the main reason to buy)
- CPU i3-330M with intel HD-Graphics quite fast, except for gaming and pro video or photo applications!
(it took only about 7 minutes to install Office 2007 pro-plus)
- LED backlit display compared to the price ($1200 SONY VAIO has worse display)
- low but enough build quality for the price range
- 4 USB 2.0 with 1 eSATA, Bluetooth, 7200rpm HD, HDMI, VGA, HP Remote.
Cons;
- Fan is noisy but not disturbing. However, might not expect any noise for i3 CPU with integrated GPU (?)
- Small but visible flaws on the body. Espresso finish looks like toy not laptop.
- No multi-touch, glossy keyboard, HP games (removed immediately!)
- Windows 7 is nice but has some drawbacks due to 32 vs 64 bit applications!
This laptop is a good option if you need a laptop and don't want to spend fortune. A read a lot of bad reviews about it but I think most of them biased but I agree the customer services are terrible for all brands not only HP. I had 3 years old HP dv2000 it's graphic card died due to heat issue but 3-years was fair enough. And If I recognize to clean heat vents before I could save my dv2000 :) I believe that Laptops can live only up to 3 years effectively even if it works after that practically it would get much slower and pain to use.
Customer Rating: Summary: DV6-2170US Startup Comment: So far I am quite happy with my new DV6-2170US. It is not destined to run software that will tax it, but after my first week it has performed well with the applications I have. Technical support from HP was awful, but I expected that. (During the process of making Office 2003 operational I was informed that, among other things, Office 2003 was not oompatible, even with Windows 7 Professional, and that my wireless router was not compatible with Windows 7! Both issues were overcome with a few minutes of help from my ISP's technical people.)
I did enable Windows 7 Professional immediately, and I did download the XP emulator (all 400+MB!) I have not needed the emulator to-date, however. I can not speak for Windows 7 Premium, but Professional supports Office 2003 Professional, and all of my other XP applications. (Sony Sound Stage, Starry Night Pro, Photoshop, a British-based laboratory data acquisition system, an many others.) If you plan to use the XP emulator, note that not all processors are supported. (And it requires enabling the processor's XP emulation mode in the BIOS.)
You can read the performance results in other reviews. I am still busy uninstalling unwanted software provided by HP. Again, with the exception of HP's tech support, I am very happy.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent All Around Performer Comment: Good:
Core i7 Intel chip
Doesnt have a lot of "Bloatware" to bother you
Snappy and speedy
Good amount of space on the harddrive
Relatively quiet even when the fans are spinning
Lightweight for the kind of power it punches
Has a num-pad
Screen is very bright thanks to the LED lighting
Bad:
Fingerprint Magnet on the keyboard, outer shell and even on the handrests
Depending what you do, it can get pretty hot
Also Depending what you use the laptop for, the battery life can get cut short, but thats with any laptop really.
This laptop is a pretty versitile laptop that can appease the gamer, power user, or even a web surfer. It is a really sleek looking laptop and it doesnt scream out like the alienware laptops or dell XPS. The only thing that brings attention to the laptop is the light it has on the outerside lid. It lights up the HP logo, which some people will like or some wont. The laptop keyboard is kind of squished because they added a numpad, but coming from a 17" laptop with no keypad, this was a welcomed addition. The LED lit screen is amazing. Everything comes out crisp and bright especially since the graphics are being run on a dedicated nvidia m230 card. This card helps out with more of the demanding resources when playing a PC game, and will drop the battery life.
Customer Rating: Summary: WOW!!! Comment: Perhaps it's because I upgraded from a really old HP (dv1000) but I am thoroughly impressed with this laptop. I have not put it down yet. P.S. Windows 7 is the shisnit.
