Customer Rating: Summary: 3-yr laptop warranty Comment: I never received a warranty certificate which I asked for and never received an answer. I have no idea whether or not the extended is in effective or guaranteed.
Customer Rating: Summary: Sucker bait Comment: Extended warranties are great products-- for the companies providing the warranties, but not for you.
Put simply, companies do not deliberately go into business to pay more than they collect ;-)
The warranty providers know pretty well how much they will pay to cover damage/replacement on all their policies aggregated together. They add a substantial profit margin and divide by the number of policies to get the price they charge you.
Their business model is like a casino running a clean game-- the bet is still a bad deal for you even when the company is smart enough to pay you promptly with a smile (just as it's shortsighted for a big casino to cheat).
In short, the expected return on your investment on an extended warranty is almost always negative. You can only expect to win if you know you are a harsh user who is -much- more likely to break your item. Even then, it only works if enough other ordinary users continue to buy the warranties.
-----
This argument does not imply that you should never buy insurance. If you lose your home, for example, the actual cost impact you feel is likely to be much larger than the dollar cost of rebuilding it because you will not be able to raise the money on your own after a disaster. This allows the insurance company to take in more than it pays out, making a profit, while still providing you a useful service.
It works because the premium you pay is less than your expected cost of a disaster, even though the premium will be more than your expected dollar receipts from claims.
A good touchstone is that you should not choose to insure unless a worst-case loss would be financially crippling.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great warranty and price Comment: I have had a dozen ST warranties and have had no problems dealing with the company. I have recieved full purchase price back on a cell phone so far. I have a dishwasher, cell phones, and computer warrantys with ST. The dishwasher warranty was about 1/2 the cost of Sears. It is also a benefit to have them keep a copy of your reciept. The warraty does start at purchase date on all items. You can usually find a discount on the warranty purchase price just search for a ST discount.
Customer Rating: Summary: Unbelievably great claim service & payment Comment: I purchased a warranty on a PC about a year ago. Last Thursday I filed an email claim, as the PC would not hold an operating system. I was paid my claim within 72 hours to PayPal. I never expected that it would be that easy. I highly recommend this company. Great service, prompt payment. Really sensational!
Customer Rating: Summary: # of years includes factory warranty Comment: The warranty is for three years from purchase.
It is misleading but I would use the Squaretrade warrany in lieu
of the factory warrany. The factory warranty is usually a big hassle.
We all know how bad customer service is these days. Companies like Best Buy need to quit ripping off consumers
with thier grossly overpriced products and even more overpriced warranties. I stopped shopping there
years ago. In my opinion the internet was the worst thing to happen to places like BestBuy. Do some basic online research into what you are looking for before you buy and if you still don't feel comfortable then go shop there. My previous experiences with BestBuy were good and they honored thier warranties but DANG$$!
