Editorial Reviews:

The CAXM Series external hard drive delivers reliable storage expansion and the incredible 3.0Gbps transfer speed of eSATA, all in one sleek aluminum package. The transfer speed, at six times faster than USB 2.0, will blow you away; it's made possible with our easy-to-install eSATA bracket kit (included). The external hard drive's solid aluminum enclosure boasts exceptional heat dissipation for near-silent, fan-less operation. The CAXE is remarkably durable, offering state-of-the art shock absorption and superior all-around performance, and its stackable design gives you a streamlined, uncluttered workplace.

Customer Rating: Summary: Good semi-portable HDD Comment: - Big and heavy, requires external power connection.
- No problems connecting the eSATA; immediately recognized by Ubuntu Linux; sustained file I/O rates of 100+ MBps reading, 40+ MBps writing on the pre-formatted NTFS
- Not a true portable but ought to be very good as HD extender, video storage or temporary/backup storage during system maintenance. USB connection should simplify quick hookups but for large file transfers eSATA just can't be beaten.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not reliable, company not trustworthy Comment: I have purchased three of these units (Mar 2008 500GB, Jun 2008 500GB, and Nov 2009 1TB). I use only the SATA connection.
The first one is still working fine, and contains a Western Digital Caviar drive (WD5000AAJS).
The second one reported itself to software as being a Western Digital drive, but it failed after 16 months and when I opened it up, it actually contained some no-name Platinum PWD5000 drive, masquerading as a Western Digital drive - not ethical!
The third one arrived with the SATA connection not working at all, only the USB. It had a "Hitachi inside" sticker on the box and this time indeed did have a Hitachi drive inside.
In conclusion, Cavalry cannot be trusted to put decent drives in these enclosures, and indeed used a no-name unreliable one pretending to be a decent drive. Furthermore, the part that Cavalry makes (the SATA/USB card inside the enclosure) is not reliable.
For my latest drive (Dec 2009), I bought a bare drive (Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB) and the Vantec NexStar CX NST-300SU-BK enclosure, so far so good.
By the way, as a backup strategy, I use two 1TB drive enclosures, one of which is stored at a friend's house. I copy all the drive partitions on my computer to a 1TB drive (using Macrium Reflect free imaging software) which takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes for 360GB of data, using SATA. Once a week when I go to my friend's house, I swap the two drive enclosures.
Customer Rating: Summary: Pay attention to the good reviews Comment: Notice something? They almost always, and this goes for all Cavalry products, are from people who have had this "device" for a short period of time. You can not possibly review a hard drive, where most people store important files on and wish to do so for a long duration of time, after having it a few short weeks. Yes, you may be glad you purchased this at first, but within a year or two it will be one of your biggest regrets you ever wasted money on. Just do yourself a favor, this is not a personal vendeta but a concern that no one gets screwed over like I did.
Customer Rating: Summary: business ethics as bad as quality Comment: pay close attention to the negative reviews for this product. many cavalry externals notoriously come dead in the box, or tend to crash anywhere between 6 months to just over a year after purchasing the product. their customer support isn't helpful and if it crashes just after a year you're screwed because their warranty is strictly only one year, as opposed to the most leading brands who extends their warranties to at least 3 years. also, cavalry has this nasty habit of buying their own drives from their resellers JUST so they can write positive reviews for them. also, they claim their product is american made but what they really mean is they are assembled in america, all the components are made in china just like all other external hard drive brands. also, the cavalry assembly team is down to three people; a majority of them have already been laid off. this is a bad product from a bad company.
Customer Rating: Summary: My Second Successful Hard Drive from Cavalry Comment: I bought a 1tb hard drive from Cavalry about a year ago and because I had such a good experience I decided to buy from them again because I ran out of space. This hard drive has almost the same look as the other, though the other was silver. The eSata connection is very convenient, even though the speed doesnt seem all that different than USB. Overall it is a successful purchase, I have almost filled this hard drive up with TV Shows and Movies and had no serious issues. Compared to my other hard drive that I figured would be nearly identical, this one seems a bit worse. It is a bit smaller, and looks more sleek. However it runs far hotter than the first I bought, and is noticeably louder. I can actually hear it spinning from my bed and that is a problem for me. Other than these minor problems, it has functioned perfectly for what I needed.
