Customer Rating: Summary: Clumbia Bonehead Shirts Comment: I have been buying Columbia Bonehead shirts for my husband for many years now. He is an A/C contractor and a Maintenance Supervisor for apartment communities, the shirts get a tough work out and continued washing. They are top quality shirts that have lasted longer than most shirts would have in the professions my husband is in. I would recommend the Columbia Shirt name to anyone, they are well made and worth the money. Laurie Dughi Customer Rating: Summary: great shirt Comment: I have been searching for a new shirt style for several years. As a serious geek, I have worn BDUs (mostly black) for over 3 decades because of all the pockets, the solid construction, the comfort, and the constant availability. However, with the increasing shift toward militaristic fascism in America, I needed to distance myself from the specter of Nazi ghosts that seem to be trying to take over. Bad karma there.
After years of searching, I finally found a well designed shirt with big pockets from a reliable vendor - this one. I am very happy with it.
It is made of a light weight material in only a couple of colors, but the pocket design is easily the best I have ever seen on a shirt. It is roomy, comfortable, and easy to move around in, too.
There are two large (8 inches by 6 inches) pockets on the chest, with smaller pockets sewn over the bottom part of the outside of each big pocket. All but one of these 4 pockets have a cover flap with a velcro tab, and the other is an open top design with a velcro tab in the middle. The left side also has a pen pocket. There are various other tabs, loops and such, probably for holding fishing tackle. The long sleeved version also has a nifty button, tab and loop setup for holding the sleeves when rolled up (Swiss tabs, I think they're called).
The large pocket on the left is big enough for a regular DVD case and other items the size of two checkbooks. The large right side pocket won't hold a DVD, as the flap stitching for the lower pocket restricts it just a hair too much. The pockets are wide and long, but not very deep (not a bellows style). I can still carry a lot of stuff comfortably and in relative safety in these pockets, however!
The upper back has a mesh panel covered with a cape of the shirt material, stitched at the top, sides, and middle bottom, leaving large spaces open for ventilation. This cape catches easily on things and I tore one shirt very quickly that way.
It loses one star for the light weight of the fabric (it is a hot weather shirt), and for the lack of color choice. They need more fabric and color choices, specifically a sturdy poly-cotton blend in rich, primary colors (IMHO).
They also need some help with naming stuff, because "Bonehead" is a silly name for a shirt this good, even if it is a great fish name. Also, the color I like best is a very light blue they call "White Cap." That is silly and confusing - this shirt isn't white, and white caps aren't light blue.
This shirt is the next best thing to a photographer's vest or bush jacket. I love it. I hope more people pay attention to the great pocket design. Pockets are so badly designed on most clothes.
Also, Bealls has been great. I ordered two of these shirts on a Wednesday evening and got them by USPS on Saturday. Good job!
