We use it in a U-shape with the couch sealing off the "U". We do need to put stuff on the other side for support as my baby can push the gate and stand up holding onto the gate and shake it. He can push the gate open but at least it keeps him away from the TV and fireplace. HINT: Do NOT buy two extensions, as the superyard becomes unstable with more than one set added (per manufacturers specifications).
