Imagine yourself living in Costa Rica. You stroll home past lush vegetation after a long day of surfing. You know the locals and speak Spanish with ease. You show visiting friends around with the confidence of one who belongs. Author Erin Van Rheenen shows you how to make your dream take shape. She left her life as a guidebook editor in the San Francisco Bay Area to make a home abroad in Costa Rica. While some give up—daunted by the financial, bureaucratic, and decision-making issues that accompany a move so extraordinary—you'll be led step-by-step through the information you need on visas, money, jobs, housing, safety, language, culture, and history. Erin has done the research and made the mistakes—so you don't have to. There's a place that matches your budget, needs, and dreams: perhaps it's an impressive new condominium in the upper-class San José suburb of Escazú, a wooden house on stilts in the isolated Caribbean coast town of Tortuguero, or a mountain retreat with a view of the Arenal Volcano. You can make it happen. With Living Abroad in Costa Rica, it's easier than you think.

Customer Rating: Summary: Pleased Comment: I ordered 2 books, one for a gift and one for myself. They came quickly and are filled with good, practical information.
Customer Rating: Summary: Although my Spanish is quite good, this book entices me to move to Costa Rica. Comment: I am seeking to minimilize my life style. I am tired of the instant gratifcatiion culture that this country seems to have become, and Costa Rica does not seem to have come this far, yet. Simplicity and genuineness are rare traits.
This book is the best intro to a country and its culture that I have read, although alot has to be said about the "Ticos" making a very good case for themselves for starters. I skip around in this book and read passages at irregular intervals. If you are interested in CR, this book is an amazing find. Better than any of the junk on the internet which is mostly trying to sell you Real Estate anyway.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Expat Bible Comment: This work answers more questions about moving, to and living in, Costa Rica than I could think to ask. Info is provided in an unbiased way so that you understand both the positives and negatives. We're taking the next step, a visit to CR, but will now be armed with a wealth of info, and will be aware of what to look for. Great Buy!
Customer Rating: Summary: A travel guide and instructional manual for American's considering moving Comment: Over the past two decades, growing numbers of Americans have migrated to Costa Rica and made homes and lives for themselves that are comfortable, adventurous, memorable, and eminently satisfying. Erin Van Rheenen was one of those who left her life in the United States behind and settled in Costa Rica. She draws upon her own experience and expertise to author this newly updated and expanded second edition of "Living Abroad In Costa Rica", a travel guide and instructional manual for Americans considering moving to this beautiful nation. Included in this thoroughly 'user friendly' manual is a wealth of practical information on setting up your daily life including the issues of visas, finances, employment, education, and health care. Informed and informative, "Living Abroad In Costa Rica" also addresses how to rent or buy a home that fits diverse needs and a range of budgets, the best places to live, as well as learning the language and understanding the culture. "Living Abroad In Costa Rica" is an essential and enthusiastically recommended instructional guide for anyone considering establishing themselves in Costa Rica whether in the form of a vacation home or a permanent residence.
Customer Rating: Summary: This book helped me move to Costa Rica Comment: This wonderful, practical and well written book helped me move to Costa Rica several years ago. It covered just about everything I needed to know to make a successful transition to a new culture and society, and all the details that go with it.
It is well organized and has many useful tips, examples, and lists of contacts. It is realistic and down to earth.
I heartily recommend this book for anyone thinking of moving to Costa Rica.
I love Costa Rica, but know that it isn't for everyone. It is a very different culture, with it's own unique way of doing things. Be sure to rent a place and live in the country for at least a year before you buy.
Learning Spanish is vital. Contrary to common myth, most Costa Ricans don't speak English, and learning Spanish is not only good manners for a resident, it is also the key that will unlock the beauty and joy of the culture.
Pura Vida!
