Toshiba Satellite A665-S6055 LED TruBrite 16-Inch Laptop (Black)

I am about to course a Master in Germany in Engineering, and I was looking for a laptop that could stand the exigency that a career in Engineering demands. This means, a decent video card (Nvidia 310) for my 3D modeling software, specialy Solidworks, a fast processor (Intel i5) por multitasking and calculations. And so far I can not complain, this laptop does all of these tasks very smoothly. But in particular, it is the new i5 processor what worths the money here. Believe me, if you are one of those like me that had a dilema between the cheaper i5, or put an extra money to get a laptop with i7, save that money, because i5 is more than enough for high speed demanding tasks (and remember I use engineering programs). I guess that if you are into multimedia editing of large videos and photos at the same time, then i7 would be your best choice. But for the rest 85% percent of us that will never take full advantage of this processor, it is just not worth it.

But I was also looking for a entertainment center for my 2 year academic program. This means, that I wanted something that could gather TV, DVD, Music, Nice resolution (1366 x 768, it is not 1080p, but you wont even notice), nice grapchics card and nice speakers in one laptop. And this Toshiba Satellite A665 S6055 does it all. DVD movies play very smoothly and vivid, plus the awesome sound coming from this pair of stereo Harman/Kardon speakers, which are very loud and crisp. I even use them as portable speakers to play my Zune thanks to "Sleep and music" feature.

Not to mention the design, limited edition because of the 25th anniversary. It is just beautifull and very stylish, less prone to fingerprints, the keyboard is great because the keys are a little separated one from each other and it is very confortable to type in. The numeric 10 pad is an useful add-on for a person like me that use numers the whole day. Windows 7 is a nice tool, I am just getting used to it, but certainly is so much better than Vista.

This A665 series laptop is so low priced, not because of lower performance, but because of lower hard drive capacity (who needs more than 285 GB?) and for having an Nvidia 310 instead of a 330M (If you are not a hard gamer, the 310 is perfect). So, for the price, this is an awesome entertaining/working laptop, REALLY fast, Big screen yet portable that I highly reccomend.

Acer Aspire AS5741Z-5539 15.6-Inch HD Wi-Fi Laptop (Black)

I've been using this laptop for about a week and overall I am very happy with this purchase. The machine is fast, the screen is looks amazing (glossy, FYI), very bright and no dead pixels. Another plus is that there was not excessive bloatware on this unit, and I only had to remove a handful of trial software, un-needed apps and desktop shortcuts to clean it up. The speakers sound good, and HDMI out is a nice option (though we're unlikely to use it). I like, too, that the outside of the case is matte, so it does not attract fingerprints.

I removed one star for two key reasons:

- The keyboard is "soft"; we're clicky-keyboard family. It's layout is fine, comfortable, etc, but it will take some time to adjust to the softness of this keyboard.
- I was unable to connect to my 5GHz wireless N network, but a few comments about this:

I have a dual-band router (Linksys WRT600N), sending both G and N speeds separately. This Acer was unable to connect to the N, but the G connection was fine. Note that my work laptop connects to the N network without issue. I think it may have to do with a newer wireless chipset in this unit because, although it only connects to G, it's reporting speeds of 130mbs (over the 54mbs 802.11G standard). Regardless, we're happy with the wireless performance and speed so far, but disappointing and frustrating it didn't "just work".

I tried contacting Acer support and though I only had the unit less that week, they stated that they did not have resources to assist me with this problem and directed me to fee-based support. Frankly, I find that a bit appalling. I happen to be fairly technical, but if you need basic support from a company, it's best to look elsewhere. This was the main reason for the star coming off.

In summary, if you need an affordable, full-featured laptop, this is a great option, but only if you're comfortable digging out of your own support holes -- Acer is not your friend post-sale. Extra props to Amazon (as always) for crediting me when the price dropped prior to my receiving the computer.

Dell Latitude D420 12" Laptop Core Duo 1.2Ghz 1GB RAM

I have had this D420 for 2 years and it has never failed me no matter what. I take it every day to college. And to get to my school, I commute in the crowded NY subway for 1 hour one-way! I also take it when I travel. So far it has been in London (UK), Moscow (Russia), and twice in Kiev (Ukraine).

This computer is very thin and weights only 3 lb. It has the magnesium-alloy frame and high-quality plastic outer shell. It is really rugged and rigid - no flex whatsoever. It has withstood the beating very well - there are practically no marks or scratches after 2 years.

My laptop came with Core Solo U1300 1.06GHz processor, 1.5GB of RAM, and Windows XP Pro. The system is very stable - never had any problems with it. I installed AVG antivirus, Windows Defender, and Win Patrol HIPS. With all this running, I am able to use MS Word 2007, MS Excel 2007, Firefox (several tabs open), and Media Player at the same time with relative ease. I usually surf Internet, watch YouTube or Hulu, and do light photo editing with XNView. With an external DVD drive, I watch movies and rip CDs. Also, I work with Word, PowerPoint, and Excel every day. I even do some occasional gaming (WarCraft 3 runs smoothly on medium/low settings!) But do not expect this laptop to be lightning-fast. And do not try to play Crysis! This computer takes its time at the start-up (nothing too big though) and when opening multiple apps.

The computer is very power-efficient. The battery lasts for several hours and easily gets me through my day in college. The wireless card works just fine. I use it to connect to my campus network. At my home, I use wired DSL modem via the network card - no problems here either. When I went to Russia and Ukraine, I used the built-in dial-up modem - worked like charm. There is a slot for a Cellular HSDPA modem - never used it. I like the SD Card slot - use it a lot. The speaker is really tiny, but I use external speakers or headphones for music. The keyboard is really comfortable. I have had something like a dozen laptops, and I think that d420 has one of the best keyboards I have seen so far. The touchpad is good too, though I usually use a wireless mouse.

To extend connectivity and avoid plugging and unplugging numerous cords every day, I bought a Dell Media Base with built-in DVDRW drive. Now my DSL modem, speakers, printer, and power cord are constantly connected to the Base and the d420 sits on top of it. This also allowed me to move all the cords to the back, so they do not get in the way.

Long story short: I am really happy with it - highly recommended. You can also find very good reviews of this laptop on notebookreview and notebookcheck.

ASUS A52F-XA2 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Helped a friend set up his new i3 laptop, I'm pretty impressed for this relative low end CPU.

My biggest beef with this machine is the 18 (EIGHTEEN) shortcuts I found on the desktop when I booted up. All flavors of crapware that you don't want and don't need that include a 90 day subscription to Trend Micro Anti-Virus which MaximumPC magazine rated as the WORST AV package on the market in their May 2010 edition. Now I know that doesn't mean much, but its disquieting when the defacto Hardware Champion of the entire computer industry (IMO) loads up a new machine with a truckload of unrecognizable garbageware like Splendid Utility and AP Bank, among others I've never heard of and don't have any use for. Oh well, while cleaning all this junk out of the HD I also noticed the boot time is right at 4 minutes, that's with the included utility Asus Fast Boot engaged!!!

On the upside, the display is bright and crisp and the graphics are amazing. And, the real good news here this machine is easily upgradable to 6 or 8Gig which I highly recommend. Not a fan of the chicklet keyboard either, and you will find it difficult navigate in the dark. There is no resident media player like Power DVD 10, only Windows Media Player so you may want to install VLC for your DVD or if you want better performance then Power DVD 10 Deluxe should be the ticket since it upconverts DVDs to HD.

Now that you've gotten rid of all the pre-installed junk provided by Asus this machine performs pretty well. This machine is a multimedia/multitasking monster, and the Power 4 Gear power settings will give you about 2 1/2 hours on the battery, and it runs very cool, no heat discharge at all. The display is the most impressive thing about this laptop. And the graphics nothing short of incredible, and the boot time is just over 1 minute now that we've got the startup programs under control.

The biggest complaint about this laptop is the touchpad (Elan Smart-Pad) is very erratic. And thats after turning off ALL of its services except the basic functions. HELLO ASUS, FIX THIS PROBLEM!!!! If you buy an Asus laptop you have to expect to have touchpad problems out of the gate, complaints are posted all over the web dating back 3-4 years, and you cannot install the latest drivers....they just wont install, Asus prevents it. The best fix for this touchpad is a Microsoft 3500 mouse which you should buy when you get this machine. Problem solved. A 5 star product if not for this pathetic Elan Tech "Smart-Pad" which Asus should have fixed 6 months ago.

BTW, any new Windows 7 laptop will benefit from a memory upgrade to at least 6Gig. This is because your video has allocated to it a set amount of system ram, usually 1Gig or more. Just for kicks, go to Crucial's website and run their System Analyzer to tell you exactly what you need, including speeds and timing to exactly match the specs of this Asus machine. It takes about 5 minutes to remove the backplate and replace one of the memory sticks with a new 4Gig module and the performance increase is well worth the $50 you might spend. For example, I upgraded my own Asus i5 and the Windows Experience number went from 5.9 to 6.6 with the upgrade going from 4 to 6Gig.

HP ENVY 14-1163SE Notebook PC

It is wonderful powerful computer if you like playing games doing video editing or use other powerful software.

My first impression when I took out box was "wow". It is sleek looking , reminds you of Apple MacBook Pro.

Keyboard: It has island keyboard easy to use with red back lit light which makes it beautiful.

Touch pad: It is little finicky. The touch-pad is somewhat bulky and took me a while to get used to. But with updated features like 2 and 3 finger gestures/scrolling make it pretty neat. I still prefer to use a mouse.

Screen Dipslay: I was disappointed with the screen resolution.

Graphic Card:
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI] - For Dual Core Processors. Good for most of the software. The switchable graphics helps you to save battery. Only disadvantage it does not switch graphic card automatically like nvidia graphic cards.

Meomory : I bought one with 4gb and it meets most of my need.I Play lots of game and use applications like photo shop, final cut pro.

Battey: I am also disappointed with battery life. You can increase battery life buying an external device but that makes your laptop bulky and heavy.

Core i5 is very powerful to meet most of your needs but heats your laptop after short duration.

It claims to be awesome audio. But you can't find difference until you use a external speakers or headphones.

Overall, this is one heck of a laptop for the price. Rivals the MacBook pro. Portable, quick, looks sweet, best audio out there. A great buy.

Update: If you guys have any questions that is not answered on my review just leave a comment below and i will answer it as soon as possible.

Toshiba Satellite L635-S3050 13.3-Inch LED Laptop (Fusion Finish in Helios Grey)

i took it last week, shipping & handling are excellent.
but i've noticed the listing price of Amazon is $729 today,
but mine is $742, hope the Amazon can refund some money.

Anyway, it seems this model has some problems for sure,
first of all, if there are some big data transmission,
along with the big noise at the right side of the laptop,
seems it's from the vent.
secondly, when Bluetooth Manager made connection with
other BT devices, blue screen!!! 100%. but i'm sure i've
installed drivers and patch perfectly. hope the Toshiba
technician will release new drivers.

Apple 13.3" MacBook Air 2.13GHz, 4GB RAM, 256GB Flash Storage, NVIDIA GeForce 320M (Z0JH-2.13-4GB)

I purchased this exact configuration (the maxed out 13") a few weeks ago. It's my first Mac.

There are lots of cool things about the new Macbook Airs. But what stands out most to me is the performance gain from an SSD instead of a spinning magnetic hard drive. It boots up from cold to ready in under 10 seconds. Seriously. It shuts down in about 4-5 seconds. Of course, you don't need to shut it down and boot it up from cold every time - just shut the lid and it goes to sleep in 1 second. Open it later and it wakes up just as you left it - in about 1 second. Really. Windows laptops have this same feature, but in my experience it doesn't wake up about 1/4 of the time, so I stopped using it. But it works perfectly on the Mac.

Reading from and writing to the SSD is very fast, whether you're installing programs or loading files. The difference is striking compared to my Dell XPS laptop, which has a 7200rpm hard drive and Core 2 duo processor with a higher rated speed.

Now that I have a laptop with an SSD as the main drive, I will never go back to one using a spinning hard drive - it's yesterday's technology and just doesn't perform well, compared to this. Of course, part of the performance gain could well be due to the Mac OS X. OS X seems more stable and refined than Windows 7 (and I like Windows 7, though I'd like anything after the disaster that was Windows Vista).

The Air's integrated NVIDIA 320 graphics handles all my needs very well, though I am not a graphics-intensive gamer or video editor, just an average user.

Battery life is really exceptional. At this moment, I've been running my MBA 5 or 6 hours since the last charge, and the battery meter still shows 44% remaining. Since I bought it, I have gotten at least the rated 7 hours of battery life every time. This, too, is due at least in part to the SSD. Regular hard drives use a lot of juice - they have motors that physically spin a magnetic platter 5400 or 7200 revolutions per minute. With SSD, there's no spinning disk and no motor, hence longer battery life.

The MBA runs cool most of the time. After I use it for a few hours at a time, the bottom gets SLIGHTLY warm. This is a huge improvement over EVERY OTHER LAPTOP I've ever owned or used, which get VERY WARM or even HOT.

I've only heard the fan come on ONCE - the first day, when I was installing MS Office using an external DVD/CD drive. Other than that, my MBA has been completely silent and cool.

Once I complete my transition from Windows to Mac, this MBA will be my main home computer. For average users like me, it's plenty powerful enough. At home, I have it plugged into an external monitor (which requires a $20 adapter), an external mouse, plus I have an external USB drive for backups and an Apple Super Drive (external DVD/CD). I slightly regret buying the Super Drive; Amazon sells Samsung drives that perform better and cost about $30 less.

The everyday experience of using the 13" MBA is like that of using a regular Macbook, Macbook Pro, or other "serious" laptop. What I mean is, when you're using it, it LOOKS and FEELS like using a "serious" laptop, not a laptop that makes compromises to achieve ultra portability. But when you take it with you somewhere, THAT'S when you notice how wafer-thin and feather-light it is.

And for something so remarkably thin, it feels very sturdy. Build quality is excellent.

I read a lot of other reviews by long-time MB users, many of whom are disappointed that the MBA doesn't have the backlit keyboard that Macbooks have. I've never had that feature on a laptop, so I don't miss it. But for people who do, you can get an LED lamp on an adjustable arm that plugs into the USB port - not a very elegant solution, but functional and inexpensive - Amazon has some good ones pretty cheap.

This is probably not a huge factor in your decision, but you might be interested in knowing the sound quality coming from the headphone jack is excellent. I did an A/B comparison between my MBA, my Dell XPS, and the Lenovo ThinkPad I use at work. I used high-end headphones to listen to a track encoded in iTunes at 320 bps on all 3 machines. The sound quality from the MBA's headphone jack was great, as good as my iPod touch, and way better than the Dell or Lenovo.

On the other hand, tiny speakers built into the MBA are no better than the average laptop speakers.

If you're thinking about buying this, I have a few suggestions.

First, go to a store and see one in person. Play around with it.

Second, make sure you know all the options available at time of order. The 11 and 13 inch MBAs can be ordered with upgrades (bigger SSD, faster processor, more RAM). But, once you buy a MBA, you may not be able to upgrade these components later. (Apple says you cannot. Some user forums say you can. I'd rather not take my chances.) So, you should probably opt for as many of the upgrades as you can afford at the time of initial purchase.

I just began working on mine today and whattya know..it does not have any freaking programs on it!!!
You must 'make it your's' and update lot's of stuff.
The one I bought was from 2005 and nothing was updated since, so read my comment next to find out what best to do when you buy used.
I expected from the first review that is it "was packed with useful programs!"
You do not need to buy certain programs but trust me, it will NOT BE LOADED.

*!*!UPDATE!*!* 1/11/11
So it's been over a month of use for my laptop and I am still impressed.
I have not had any problems with any of the hardware. Since purchase, I've bought a Western Digital My Book Essential 1 TB USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive and have had amazing results with 3.0 transfer speeds. I was originally considering to purchase a 3.0 enclosure and HDD; however, the price for doing so (at the time of purchase) was as much or more than the $99 1TB WD My Book 3.0. Transfer speeds on a USB 2.0 port get up to roughly 25MB/S. I just tested a transfer on the 3.0 USB port and transfer was around 100MB/S. The slowest transfer speed I've yet had with the 3.0 was around 60MB/S (Note, you must have a 3.0 capable device plugged into the 3.0 port to receive 3.0 speeds).

----(And thus, the review prior to my update)----
The first feature I want to compliment is the cooling system. I've never used a laptop that has a more efficient system for cooling than this Asus. The air coming out can even get so hot that I've considered to try cooking ramen when in-game (I kid). At least I know that by the force and heat of its exhaust, and no signs of overheating, that it is doing its job.

The second feature that really stuck out was the keyboard design. I know that several other laptops I've seen sport a similar design (and many do not), but I really like the extra space between keys. I do not have big fingers, but if you are a bigger fingered guy (or gal) who is worried about a cramped keyboard, this one wont be a problem. The lighting of he keyboards is beautiful, and adjustable. From dim to bright (but never too bight), you wont need any secondary light (or rely on the screen) to guide you through the night.

The 1080p screen is truly bright and beautiful! But it is NOT 3D capable! Unfortunately, like most laptops, the sweet-spot viewing angle is very limited. More on all this later. The text may be too small with original settings for some people (if you find yourself needing reading glasses), but Windows 7 makes it easy to adjust the resolution and text size. The graphics card allows me to run in the highest settings in most games (or near highest). Some games I play are Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Civilization 5, Left4Dead 2, DiRT 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dawn of War II... I do not have exact settings and FPS on-hand, but if you would like for me to let you know what I can run and how well, comment and I'll reply. I personally require over 30FPS and prefer 60FPS. Just to give an idea of the power of the CPU & GPU, I am able to emulate Wii and Gamecube games on the Asus smoothly. I am still working out the PS2.

I specialize in photo-editing and photo-manipulation. Taxing projects run smoothly in Adobe Photoshop, especially when compiling and exporting. I also specialize in audio recording, mixing, mastering, and composure. It is not too difficult to get the CPU going around 30-40% in running programs such as FL Studio (when using several powerful VSTs), but I've not had any problem with the CPU capping.

The touchpad is big and can support more than one touch (I believe it is multi-touch?). In other words, I can put two fingers on the touch-pad and push them apart to zoom in on the web or a picture. It feels sensitive enough to me and easy enough to use. Some people may find the two mouse buttons to be tougher than usual to click. I personally did not have any trouble with the mouse buttons being difficult to push (it may just be that I prefer rougher buttons). Then again, I am primarily using a mouse via USB. The rubber palm-wrest is a nice addition to keep your wrists from hurting after long periods of typing.

So Pros
-Powerful Processor & GPU
-Beautiful Screen & Well Spaced, Lit Keyboard
-Super Intelligent Cooling Design
-System is quick to boot and quick to shutdown
-Nice, Crisp Altec Lansing Speakers

So now onto the less pretty things.

The Windows 7 environment, coming from a since year-one XP user (up until receiving this laptop) was impressed in many ways with the intuitive nature of the OS. However, I was frustrated several times with how difficult it was to get something done (or undone). Some things were easy, but some things seemed ridiculously difficult to do. I guess I should back that up but ...this is largely because there are protective/administrative rights that sometimes prevent things (like old files and updates) from getting removed when there is an uninstallation, repair installation, or an update. I received a nonsensical error ([...]) that prevented me from installing Games for Windows Live (GFWL), which is required by several games (unfortunately) to be played. In the end, I had to reinstall Windows 7 (from discs not supplied) and was able to finally install GFWL. That problem aside, it's taking some time to get use to.

The webcam is only sufficient. If you like smooth, hi-def webcams, this 2.0 MP wont be to your likings. Generally it is slow, and not very detailed. But all-in-all if you are just a casual chatter/webcammer then it will suffice. The mic is good enough for voice-chatting and VOIP; however, I wouldn't use it in any capacity to record vocals for tracks, or instruments, if I were aiming for semi-professional quality. Like the webcam, the mic get's the job done, but nothing more.

For me, the placement of the power charger on the right side of the laptop (previous laptops I've used were on the back), is awesome. But for some, I could see this being a problem. I love the placement, however. It's about 60% ways back on the right side. The power converter (box thingamajiger that is in the middle of the cord) is very large.

The CD/DVD drive is on the left side, close to two USB ports. I've had the cord of my mouse get in the way of the CD/DVD drive, but it is only a minor inconvenience. I just wish the drive was placed either further back, or the USB slots behind the drive.

The sound is good once you've done some tweaking. The supplied "Altec Lansing" speakers sound really nice and crisp for laptop speakers. There is no lower-mid or bass (which should be expected by most). When hooking up to my receiver (via headphone/line-out) there was no bass in music coming from my bookshelf speakers and sub-woofer. I am not sure if everyone has this problem, but I had to disable special effects in the audio control panel (things such as reverb, EQ, etcetera. There is one box to uncheck to do this). If you need to know how to do this, place a comment. After I disabled the effects, I had a nice range of sound. Although I've been spoiled by my Creative X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro card in my desktop, the laptop sound quality isn't bad (output from the laptop). Although, how I like to listen to music, the laptop cannot compete with my Fatal1ty card.

Despite the screen's beautiful quality, viewing anything that is not mono-color will gain or lose contrast based on the viewing angle. Tilt the screen back and you will immediately see the darks darken and soon begin to inverse. Tilt the screen forward and all the colors wash out and become brighter. My Cowon S9 has an AMOLED screen that doesn't wash out at any angle, and this screen being LED (which I am taking as being different from LCD), I had hoped that there would be a wide angle sweet-spot for viewing.

The product was listed by Nvidia as containing a 3D capable screen (under Notebook LCD). It listed Asus G53JW without any suffix (e.g. -XA1). This led me to believe, along with Asus' poorly worded website, that this laptop had a 3D capable screen. In no capacity is it a 3D capable screen. After purchasing a Nvidia 3D Vision kit, and calling customer services (Asus and Nvidia) I came to an understanding that it did not have a 3D capable screen. It can output to one, but it does not have one. Even though Amazon does not list this product as 3D capable, I still assumed it was based on my research with Asus and Nvidia. Maybe this is obvious to you, but if some of you are like me, you may wish to know this before purchase. If you do want this in 3D, search for the G53JW-3DE version. After having informed the Nvidia representative about the misleading information on their website, they've since adjusted it (removing the laptop listings altogether).

It is heavy. But the mobility I wanted was to be able to transport my laptop from desk to desk or take it overseas to a fancier desk. This isn't a laptop you carry with you on a nature hike or lug around a campus to sit in the grass and check Facebook. I'd imagine for most of those checking out this laptop, weight was hardly a deciding factor.

So Cons
-Adjusting to Windows 7 for a lifetime XP user
-Mediocre webcam
-Possible placement conflicts
-Mouse buttons possibly tough to push.
-Limited viewing angles.
-Rather heavy

And The Other
-I tested battery life at 100% to 10%, just light usage (web and music), lowest brightness, and it lasted somewhere from 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. That may not be impressive compared to some light, underperforming laptops, but I hope nobody will buy this for superb battery life. It's good enough to chill out back for awhile.
-It is pretty heavy. That should be expected.
-When I called the Asus tech support (regarding the monitor not being recognized as 3D capable), the guy sounded like he knew very little about computers, always having to search their database. Nvidia on the other hand, the guy knew more than me. So yay for Nvidia support, boo for Asus support.
-I had red, bloody eyes after the first day. Be sure to take breaks, especially at first if you aren't on laptops often.
-The laptop included a LCD nice screen cleaning cloth. Nice!

So far so good. Bought this after a horrible experience with a brand new Toshiba. So far I like it. Good keyboard, beautiful screen. It's a little heavier than I'd hoped (the Toshiba with same screen was at least a pound lighter) but the sound quality on this model is killer. Best laptop sound I've ever run across. This is my first Dell; if it works out it won't be my last. Oh, the fan is a little noisy, but I suspect all these high powered machines run hot.
